High Profile Cases and Client Privacy

A message from Brian J. Neary:

At the Law Offices of Brian J. Neary, we know that being charged with a crime can be a terrifying experience. We also understand that while people fear the outcome of legal action, they are often just as concerned with being exposed in the press and the impact that will have on their families, friends, and business colleagues. Sometimes, the case is newsworthy, maybe even notorious or spectacular. Sometimes, it is the client who is the public figure, a celebrity or government official. Regardless, when the media want a story, they want it now – and the rules of evidence and presumption of innocence that govern court proceedings do not apply. At the Law Offices of Brian J. Neary, we recognize that a client needs an advocate not only in court but in the court of public opinion.

I understand the media, and I respect that reporters are just doing their jobs. Our roles are both protected by the US Constitution: the right to a free press as well as the client’s right to counsel.

In more than two decades of representing clients in high-profile cases, I have learned how to protect a client’s privacy and yet represent the client’s side of the story. As an advocate on a case or expert legal analyst, I have been interviewed in newspapers from the New York Times to the local shopper newspaper and been seen or heard on every major radio and television network in the country, including CBS, CNN, Court TV and Fox News.

What that means for the client is that I realize how potentially important and threatening media coverage can be. I am fully prepared to tackle the tough questions when the spotlight is brightest to ensure that the treatment my client receives in the press is as fair and just as possible.
